Description
Reporting to the Community Services Director in conjunction with the Corps Officers, the Children & Youth Ministry Coordinator is responsible for the full range of programming geared toward the physical, emotional and spiritual well-being of children and youth. The position establishes and maintains effective working relationships with individuals/families, additional support workers, temporary employees, as well as church and community volunteers.
HOURS:
- 25 hours per week including weekends.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ensure that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is exemplified in the performance of all job responsibilities and through personal example.
- Agree and adhere to The Salvation Army’s mission, values, and standards.
- Develop, implement, maintain, and evaluate programs/ministries relevant to the children and youth of the community (includes communication to leaders, acquiring resources, volunteer recruitment)
- Organize and supervise discipleship and outreach programs.
- Recruit, direct and supervise volunteers for children’s and youth programs.
- Organize and supervise programs for community and corps children on PA days and during summer holidays, March break, and any other appropriate occasions.
- Recruit and register children and youth for Salvation Army provincial camping programs and other regional and divisional events.
- Follow up with children/youth who attend Salvation Army summer camp programs, including their families, in order to build relationships and establish active links with the corps and its mission and ministries.
- Works alongside CFS director in school partnerships when applicable.
- Assist the Corps Officer in the pastoral care and spiritual development of children and their families by mentoring, disciplining, encouraging, and modeling appropriate Christian attitudes and behaviors.
- Maintain written records, logs of activities, including activity reports and statistical information.
- Attend meetings of the Mission Board when appropriate/required.
- Assist with client assistance and registration for seasonal programming.
- Connect with kids and families outside of programming to aid in building trusting relationships.
- Run and maintain our weekly Toy Library program on Saturday mornings.
- The successful candidate will be expected to participate fully in the life of this church as part of our worshipping congregation.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education/Certifications:
- Completion of formal post-secondary/college diploma of 2 or 3 academic years in the related field of study, Children/Youth.
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Experience:
- Minimum of two (2) years of prior related experience leading volunteers and working with children and youth programming.
Required Skills/Knowledge:
- Proficiency in a computerized environment; skilled in Social Media and Microsoft Office, Word, PowerPoint platforms.
- Passionate for building gospel-centered relationships with youth, children, and their families.
- Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution
- Conflict management, resolution skills, communication effectively; strong oral/written communication skills; exhibit good listening skills, lead by example demonstrating a strong work ethic; willingness to learn and to embrace change.
- Self-motivated/disciplined, effective time management and organizational skills.
- Understanding of the children and youth, and associated needs.
- Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.
Preferred Skills/Capabilities:
- Respect for and understanding of The Salvation Army – its mission, culture, and values
- Current Safe Food Handling Certificate, or willing to obtain and maintain current certificate
- Current CPR/First Aid certification, or willing to obtain and maintain current certification
- Willingness and ability to connect with local schools and organizations to offer services and programs to children & youth.
- A valid class 5 BC driver’s license.
