Curator, Western Ethnology

The Curator, Western Ethnology leads or collaborates on projects and investigations linked to the Museum’s mandate, strategic direction, and Research Strategy, concentrating on the collection of ethnographic cultural materials from what is now British Columbia and parts of Yukon. The incumbent works in collaboration with curatorial and other professional colleagues to develop physical exhibitions, web and social media content, and other public products, while maintaining an active academic profile and research portfolio. The Curator, Western Ethnology also helps facilitate physical and/or intellectual access to collections and other resources by Indigenous community members and professional peers, and in ways consistent with Museum interests, priorities and best practices. The incumbent is a representative for the Museum on public issues related to particular collections, projects, and activities, and can be expected to be engaged in a wide variety of academic and non-academic settings.

What we are looking for:
Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to establish working relationships with individuals at all levels;

Ability to work independently and as part of a team;

Excellent time management skills and the ability to multi-task, prioritize and work under pressure;

Solid communication, presentation, and writing skills;

Ability to work in French and/or English, bilingualism is an asset.

Minimum of one (1) year of relevant experience:
Conducting research in a relevant field;

Disseminating research to a variety of audiences;

Working in museums, universities, galleries, cultural centres, etc.

Knowledge of:
Applicable research, research methods, professional activities, literatures, and best practices in this and related disciplines, at the national and international level;

Applied research and communications for public audiences;

Professional networks, research opportunities, and emerging or relevant technologies or media;

Material culture, curatorial roles and responsibilities, and collections planning;

The Canadian Museum of History’s programs, activities, and operating environment.

Education: A university degree in a related field OR an acceptable combination of education and experience.

Compensation: $68,248 to $84,660 (E7P)

Status: Temporary Full-Time Position (1-year replacement with possibility of extension)

Location: 100, Laurier Street, Gatineau, Quebec

Security Clearance: Enhanced reliability
