Job Description

The Investment Management Research Team (IMR) is responsible for the oversight and fulfillment recommendations of CIBC Asset Management’s (CAM) investment strategies, as well for coordinating with Portfolio Management & Research, Product, and Distribution teams to develop portfolio construction recommendations for the firm’s managed solutions programs.

CAM is currently advancing its Alternative Investments strategy and is seeking an experienced individual to contribute to the evolution of this initiative. The incumbent will be responsible for the initial and ongoing research, and monitoring of the program. The Alternative strategy will potentially include (but is not limited to):

Strategic partnerships with outside organizations with a combination of compelling product offerings (on a standalone basis) and co-investment opportunities (inside of managed solutions) Build-up of internal/related resources to develop strong fulfillment on well-researched ideas that enhance total portfolio outcomes. Strategic acquisitions & Sub-advisory relationships

What you’ll be doing

As a Director, Alternative Investment Research, you will evaluate potential alternative managers (private real estate, private credit, private infrastructure, private equity, hedge funds, etc.) based on relevant offerings inside of Universes, as well as those introduced through advisors, counsellors, capital markets, corporate banking, commercial banking, etc. You will also optimize views based on investment merits, and business development interests, while managing relationships for the benefit of all CIBC stakeholders

The incumbent will evaluate co-investment opportunities for use inside of managed solutions, reviewing risks and reward of the asset in the context of the portfolio, and desired outcomes. You will present analysis to the decision-committee, and contribute to decisions through deep research, fact-finding, and the ability to process information into an investment signal

How you’ll succeed

Manage ongoing relationships with internal and external Alternatives managers, including day-to-day operational elements that may arise

Consult to internally-managed alternatives capabilities , recommending best practices that will improve outcomes.

Monitor alternatives mandates on CAM’s platforms for performance versus expectations on a monthly basis, and make recommendations to CAM on any deficiencies

Become a recognized thought leader in alternatives , through writing of client-friendly whitepapers and presentations to advisors, working with CAM client PMs, and other investment professionals. Represent the decision-making process to internal and external stakeholders, and promote the merits of CAM’s Alternative strategy with this context

Who you are

You can demonstrate experience in evaluating co-investments (i.e., supplemental research to the GP), including an assessment of the quality of opportunity, and a framework for valuation attractiveness, risk, and a demonstrated track record of making profitable recommendations. You will ideally have 7-10 years of experience in private and alternative strategy experience.

You exhibit the ability to clearly articulate views , demonstrated through a history of writing effective research reports, and strong verbal communication skills combined with deep understanding of operational elements of managing alternative investments
