About Our Opportunity

Reporting to the CEO, the Director leads a team of professionals in the development and delivery of policy, programs, strategic planning, and expert advice for race relations, equity and inclusion to address and prevent systemic discrimination and work towards creating a more inclusive society for all Nova Scotians.

Primary Accountabilities

Develops and manages key relationships with strategic internal/external clients. As the provincial expert on race relations, equity, and inclusion, and with a solid understanding of each client’s challenges, opportunities, and culture, consults to identify needs and initiates and maintains partnerships with government, academic/community groups and the business community to develop proactive strategies to address discrimination.

Provides expert advice and direction to the Dispute Resolution Unit on the development of strategies and methods for identification, investigation, and resolution of systemic discrimination complaints to ensure the public interest is being addressed.

Leads a team of human rights professionals, overseeing the design and delivery of learning opportunities for the public and private sectors on a wide range of issues related to human rights, including diversity, racism, sexual harassment, and accommodation of mental and physical disability.

Ensures the effective management of human and financial resources by setting and evaluating staff performance targets, promoting diversity and a healthy workplace, demonstrating leadership competencies, respecting corporate human resources practices, promoting teamwork and individual development, maintaining internal communications, monitoring expenditures while adhering to procurement guidelines.

Qualifications and Experience

As the Director, you will have an undergraduate or graduate degree with extensive, progressively more responsible experience over several years working as a senior leader. You are a strategic thinker and a key contributor at the leadership table with strong skills as a leader of leaders, relationship builder, and coach, who inspires a culture of innovation and accountability. You have a proven track record of success working with senior leaders, communicating clear expectations, providing inspirational leadership, and driving cultural change and transformation. You are committed to change management with a strong bias for open communication and collaboration with teams, partners, and stakeholders. You will leverage your strong collaboration skills to work effectively with public and private sector senior officials to build and cultivate innovative partnerships within and external to government.

You are recognized for outstanding personal and professional credibility and creative problem-solving ability, facilitation, and public speaking abilities. You will have comprehensive knowledge of Nova Scotia’s Human Rights Act and strong knowledge and understanding of the principles relating to restorative approaches in dispute resolution. You are often described as a champion of cultural uniqueness and can partner effectively with a broad range of diverse groups. A solid understanding of current and historical economic and social issues related to diversity, racism, and multiculturalism in Nova Scotia and other jurisdictions is critical. As the ideal candidate, you will bring well-rounded experience in areas such as issues management, policy and program development and delivery, and anti-racism.
