GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

Recreation Nova Scotia (RNS) is seeking a passionate, strategic, and experienced individual to take the lead as Executive Director and guide the organization through an exciting and transformational chapter in its history. This position is responsible for the promotion of recreation in Nova Scotia through advocacy, engagement with Recreation Nova Scotia members, community, and partnership development, and coordinating efforts to implement, mobilize and evaluate RNS’s strategic priorities.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Support to the Board of Directors

Implement core strategies as developed by the Board.

Act as an advisor to the President, and Board of Directors.

Evaluate the structure, policies, and practices of the Association on a regular basis and make recommendations to the President and Board regarding suggested changes to align with RNS Vision, Mission, and core services.

Prepare the Annual Report for the Annual General meeting.

Support to the membership

Develop strategies to achieve a growing and vibrant membership base.

Provide expertise to all RNS Committees to ensure RNS Board policies are followed, and Ends Statements are achieved.

Develop strategies to provide membership with a range of educational opportunities as identified by the membership.

Support all communication efforts to ensure that all members are informed of the activities and issues of the Association.

Provide platforms for sector sharing and feedback.

Prepare RNS positions and messages that assist members to be advocates in their communities.

Develop analysis, reports and positions on current issues for the Board to consider.

Maintain current membership records.

Support the implementation of an annual member-based conference.

Support to Partnership Development

Develop partnerships with government agencies, not for profit sector, allied organizations, and private sector to further the vision of RNS.

Act as liaison with regional recreation associations and municipalities in information sharing, and design of workshops and programs that will meet their needs.

Act as the Association’s liaison with the Recreation Facilities Association of Nova Scotia, The Canadian Parks and Recreation Association, The Active Living Alliance for Canadians with a Disability and other provincial, regional, and national industry related agencies, associations, and organizations.

Develop and maintain funding partnerships to diversify revenue from corporate, foundation and government sources.

Support of the financial Sustainability of RNS

Develop financial strategies to ensure the long-term financial well-being of the association, including. determining sources of revenues, fundraising, and grants.

Ensure that all expenditures are according to policy and executive limitations.

Administer the Associations budget and investments as approved by the Board of Directors.

Maintain accurate financial records.

Office Leadership

Provide leadership for the on-going operations of the RNS office.

Supervise staff and oversee individual work plans.

Provide oversight for new and existing projects and monitor outcomes.

Conduct an annual performance evaluation of staff.

Represent the Association, act as Public Relations Officer and present the preferred image of RNS.

Work with volunteers to accomplish goals.

Orient new staff to HR and Operational Policies and review frequently.

Planning

Develop a yearly work plan utilizing membership and other stakeholder input.

Assist the Board and working committees to establish long- and short-term plans, including ongoing and new initiatives for the long-term development of RNS.

EDUCATION & TRAINING

Minimum Baccalaureate degree (Recreation/Sport Management; Management; Community Development; Planning; Health Promotion)

KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE

Work experience in the Recreation profession for at least 5 years.

Knowledge and awareness of Nova Scotia Provincial initiatives.

Knowledge and experience with municipal and provincial recreation relationships and systems.

Board governance as a director, chair or in advisory role.

Fiscal management including budgets, profit and loss and balance sheets.

Experience with fund development.

Experience with project management.

Experience with partnership development and community relations.

Knowledge and training in cultural safety, equity and access.

Experience with membership associations.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

Excellent organizational skills, written and oral communication skills.

Self-directed in completing assigned tasks.

Able to work effectively in teams.

Able to lead and take directions as appropriate.

Demonstrated ability to follow through to completion of assigned tasks.

Approachable and relationship builder.

Experience in social media and web and content management, marketing, and communications.

Strong facilitation and consultation skills.

WORKING CONDITIONS

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Quiet work environment; open space office area; may require lifting (max 10lbs.); requires travel; ability to work from home on occasion

HOURS / SHIFTS

Full time (35 hours weekly); 9am – 4pm, evenings and weekends as required

SALARY

Salary range:
$65,000 – $75,000

  • Salary range will be determined based on experience.

BENEFITS

Health and Dental insurance (50%), 4 -weeks vacation, matched RRSP contribution up to 5% of gross salary; professional development support.

OTHER

Performance appraisal completed annually; contract renewed biannually.
