Fitness Center Manager

Position Summary:
The Fitness component of the Recreation program plays a vital role in the health and wellness of the McGill community. In addition to individual training available through the Fitness Center, participants can partake in a variety of in-person or on-line group fitness classes. Whether training alone or in a group setting, McGill Recreation strives to provide an inclusive and welcoming space. Reporting to the Manager of Wellness Programs and Facility Operations, the Fitness Center Manager, is responsible for oversight of the 15 000 sq. foot fitness center, all fitness related programming along with supervising a staff of approximately 90 part-time unionized amuse casual employees, including fitness center attendants, personal trainers, and group fitness instructors.

Primary Responsibilities:
Supervise approximately 90 part-time amuse casual employees, including fitness center attendants, personal trainers, and group fitness instructors.

Oversee the Fitness Center operations, which includes staff supervision, participant safety, client services, etc.

Develop, implement, and monitor the operational budgets of $250 000 for the Fitness Center and $100 000 for Group Fitness program.

Responsible for the financial oversight, monitor all revenues and expenses to ensure that budget targets are being met. Submit revised budget forecasts upon request.

Develop programming for approximately 40 group fitness classes per semester. This includes scheduling, researching best practices and trends. Registration and facility logistics.

Develop, plan, and schedule all fitness related programming including weight training classes, personal training, in-person and on-line group fitness classes, and fitness evaluations. This represents approximately 40 amuse casual staff (Fitness Trainers) and 1000 group fitness participants per semester.

Maintain accurate participation statistics in order to analyse, evaluate and alter programming when necessary.

In collaboration with the unit’s HR office, manage all aspects pertaining to the hiring of unionized casual staff including initiating and monitoring all Workday related processes.

Recruit, interview, hire, on board, train, supervise, mentor, and facilitate the professional development for approximately 90 part-time fitness center attendants, group fitness instructors and personal trainers.

Serve as a mentor and role model to casual staff in relation to performance expectations, professional development, and leadership.

Manage all staff related discipline issues in accordance to the guidelines outlined in the AMUSE collective agreement. In collaboration with the HR office, participate in disciplinary meetings.

Schedule and follow up with all personal training requests

Oversee all equipment purchases for the fitness center and the two individual workout pods. In addition, keep accurate and thorough maintenance records and equipment usage tracking.

Create an environment and offer programming that is welcoming and inclusive to the diverse population of the University.

Resolve issues pertaining to participant conduct.

Act as an Athletics and Recreation ambassador and liaise with members of the McGill community to lead and participate in new health and wellness initiatives on campus. Example staff fitness program, my healthy workplace initiatives.

Provide proper enforcement of departmental rules and policies.

Identify safety/risk management concerns at indoor/outdoor facilities; inform Manager of Operations of issues and resolutions.

Work in collaboration with facility operations manager to ensure cleanliness of Fitness Center and the two individual workout pods.

Remain current with fitness trends and benchmarks policies and procedures with other post-secondary institutions in Canada and the United States.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities

Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred. Major in recreation administration, sport management, leisure studies, physical education, kinesiology, or comparable degree. Demonstrated strong leadership, customer service, team building, and decision-making skills. Experience managing casual employees in a unionized environment. Experience developing and leading educational sessions. Experience developing and overseeing budgets. Knowledge and a strong background in fitness industry. Experience using Workday, iWork and POS software an asset. Possess a current CPR, AED, and First Aid Instructor certification, or ability to obtain one. Bilingual English and French an asset. Please note working hours are Monday to Friday 11:00am to 7:00pm.

Annual Salary:
(MPEX Grade 04) $57,330.00 – $85,990.00
