POSITION DESCRIPTION:
FULL-TIME (1.0 FTE) KINDERGARTEN TEACHER – PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAMME (IB PYP) (FULL-TIME)

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Sustain a responsive classroom community that balances the emotional, social, intellectual and physical developmental needs of early primary learners

Engage with other members of the early years team (e.g. K teaching partner, PYP Coordinator, Kindergarten Associate Teacher, PYP Educational Assistant, Learning Strategies Teachers, etc.) to collaboratively plan and guide play-based inquiry and outdoor learning experiences that incorporate the BC Ed Plan and Early Learning Framework within the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) Early Years philosophy and framework

Utilize research and evidence-based programming to nurture and support the development of foundational literacy and numeracy attitudes and skills (e.g. Orton Gillingham, Lexia, Fountas and Pinnell, Kathy Fosnot’s Contexts for Learning Mathematics, Dreambox)

Embed social-emotional learning (SEL) across the curriculum that includes core components of the Second Step Program

Prepare interactive indoor and outdoor learning provocations and environments

Differentiate teaching and learning to meet the unique intellectual, social/emotional, and behavioural needs of early primary students

Use evidence-based, developmentally appropriate practices to inform decisions about teaching and learning and assessment

Use standards-based reporting to communicate each student’s progress and final achievement in relation to subject-specific standards, drawing attention each student’s strengths, areas for improvement, and next steps for each subject area

Facilitate parent-teacher learning conferences and student-led learning conferences

Maintain consistent, open, and clear communication with parents as partners, including ongoing updates about the goals and nature of the Kindergarten program and student experiences

Contribute to the co-curricular programme of the school through coaching and/or club sponsorship

Participate in the admissions process, including attendance at admissions play date assessments

Attend and participate in core school functions and special events

Qualifications:
Bachelor of Education, Elementary – Early Primary focus

Valid and current BC teaching certificate

Experience teaching at the early primary level in an independent school environment, preferably an IB PYP school (participation in an IB PYP Category 1 workshop is an asset)

An understanding of and commitment to play-based inquiry and outdoor learning

Proven understanding of children’s social and emotional needs, particularly at the early primary level

Proven commitment and strong ability to collaborate with colleagues in shared planning and decision making, and to develop a strong and caring professional learning community that aligns with school-defined strategic goals and initiatives

Passion for continuous professional learning and growth that aligns with and supports the strategic directions of the school

Ability to integrate age-appropriate use of technology to enhance teaching and learning

Highly collegial and professional team member

Effective interpersonal and communication skills
