What responsibilities will you have in this role?

Reporting to the Manager, Health, Safety & Wellness, the Health, Safety & Wellness Consultant contributes to a high-performance organization by providing a full range of proactive health, safety and wellness services to promote a safe and healthy workplace. This role is for a technical expert in Health and Safety who provides coaching across all levels of the College on safety legislation compliance and best practices for employees and students. As well, this position contributes to the creation, implementation and administration of safety policies, procedures, processes, programs, metrics and training.

The Health, Safety & Wellness Consultant is the key advisor for all Joint Health and Safety Committees across campuses and is accountable for working with co-chairs, committee members and managers across the College. In conjunction with the Manager, Health, Safety & Wellness, this position is responsible to develop and implement a wellness strategy and plan for employees across the College. This position works in partnership with specialist areas within HR including HR Consulting & Labour Relations, Diversity Equity & Human Rights and Staff Development, as well as closely partners with Public Safety & Security and Facilities on addressing needs and issues in the areas of safety, wellness, emergency planning, WSIB, Workplace Violence and Harassment, etc.

  • Assists the Health, Safety and Wellness Manager in the development, updating and revision of corporate level health and safety policies procedures and action plans.
  • Acts as a resource to College management in developing and implementing Health and Safety solutions to support the Health and Safety Policy, Guidelines and Standard Operating Procedure aligned with College strategy and direction.
  • Researches, consults on and implements College-wide short and long term safety (student, employee) and wellness (employee) strategy targeted at legislative compliance, stakeholder needs, best practices and measurable outcomes.
  • Interacts and makes recommendations as contact and liaison on health, safety and wellness matters with the Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB), Ministry of Labour, Ministry of the Environment, Ministry of Health, safety associations, etc. and ensures appropriate handling, notification, tracking and follow up across campuses and Divisions.
  • Advises stakeholders at all levels on hazard identification and risk assessment/mitigation related to OH&S including incident investigation and management, record keeping and documentation, monitoring and compliance.
  • Provides expertise, advice and coaching to College stakeholders at all levels and oversees the functioning of all Joint Health & Safety Committees, including partnering with co-chairs, members, managers, Facilities and Security to address requirements and issues.
  • Conducts investigations in partnership with managers and Human Resources (HR) related to OHSA requirements, Workplace Violence and Harassment incidents, WSIB injury/illness occurrences and other relevant safety or wellness issues including establishing an investigation framework, interviewing witnesses, developing reports on findings and making recommendations on remedial measures.
  • Acts as contact for WSIB for Workplace Violence and Harassment investigations that they are conducting as part of their protocol and collaborates with Manager, Safety & Wellness and HR on appropriate College actions related to these.
  • Develops and completes assessments/inspections related to safety concerns, legislative/risk requirements and workplace accidents.
  • Creates and fosters a wellness culture for employees by developing, communicating, implementing and promoting clearly defined programs, initiatives and measures that leverage internal partnerships (Healthy Campus, etc.) and external partnerships/best practices.
  • Contributes to emergency preparedness and response planning. Carries out responsibilities under the Emergency Plan and supports business recovery and continuity plans.
  • Connects with Total Rewards regarding the filing and status of WSIB claims as Form 7s are filed to ensure claims management is appropriately initiated.
  • Establishes project plans, defines deliverables, manages progress and reports on results/metrics to ensure work stays on track.
  • Designs and ensures on-going management and employee training to ensure compliance related to health, safety and wellness areas.
  • Builds processes for, implements and follows up on accurate, timely completion of various health & safety surveys, audits and reports.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

What qualifications do you need for this role?

  • Minimum four year degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in Occupational Health & Safety, Health Sciences or equivalent.
  • Certification or designation in Health & Safety (CRSP) preferred.
  • Minimum seven years of health and safety and wellness experience, focused on organization-wide responsibilities across diverse stakeholder groups at all levels.
  • Strong expertise in successfully developing, implementing and measuring strategies, policies and programs in the areas of safety, wellness, workplace violence and harassment, WSIB.
  • Demonstrates superior communication in articulating direction and the reasons for it, in problem solving to resolve issues and in managing crisis situations.
  • Has experience in collaboratively partnering with others internally (at all levels), and externally to engage multiple stakeholders, foster alignment, gain consensus and influence outcomes. This includes building cases for change, delivering presentations and training to managers to get buy in and expanding external relationships.
  • Has conducted investigations related to legislative and policy requirements (i.e. injury, workplace violence and harassment, and occupational illness). Investigation process would include partnering with managers and Human Resources, developing investigation protocols, completing witness interviews, writing reports and making recommendations for remedial actions.
  • Shows thorough understanding and interpretation of related legislation and regulations in the areas of safety, wellness, human rights, labour relations and employment standards, as well as knowledge of best practices and trends impacting safety and wellness.
  • Strong analytical, coordination and project management skills with ability to prioritize changing and conflicting demands, meet deadlines, and stay productive under pressure.
  • Has designed and developed communication plans, as well as relevant content (policies, procedures, training, programs) for varying forms of communication and in particular, online methods (intranet, learning management systems, external website).
  • Ability to exercise discretion regarding sensitive or confidential issues.
  • Demonstrates expertise in delivering excellent service to others, as this is key in supporting the success of our students and the College.
  • Strong collaboration and teamwork skills.
  • Effective ability to interact with others at all levels (employee to executive) and deal with situations in ways that respect diverse backgrounds, experience and styles.
  • Flexibility in adapting to change and in participating in consultative decision-making processes.
