  • Reporting to the Shelter Manager, the Housing Social Worker provides therapeutic supports to high maintenance refugees’ through crisis intervention, trauma informed and supportive counselling, finding supportive housing suitable for the complexities of issues presented by the high need refugees and providing outreach and follow up supports upon discharge into the community from an integrated anti-racism, access and equity framework. 
  • The Housing Social Worker shall support the stabilization of high needs refugees while in the shelter program and upon discharge into the community using various therapeutic modalities and techniques and through coordinated supports from other agencies in the community to ensure stable housing.   
  • The Housing Social Worker ensures coordinated case management primarily for the Shelter Program and secondarily for the Transitional Housing Program.
  • The Housing Social worker shall integrate the use of trained Interpreters to provide programs and services to all service participants.
  • Compliance with Agency Operational, Organizational Policies – demonstrate ability to understand and to comply with Sojourn House policies and procedures, Shelter Hostel Standards, Code of Conduct and Social Work Ethics and all legislated statutory regulations and Acts
  • Other Duties  – as required

Education & Competencies

  • Minimum  BSW and registered with OCSW&SSW required
  • Knowledge of client groups – singles, separated youth and refugee families requiring high level supports
  • Knowledge of refugee law, refugee determination process, settlement and related population issues
  • Working knowledge of  IRCC/IRPR, Mental Health Act, TPA, Ontario Works and related legislation
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the housing sector related to homelessness services
  • Competency in various therapeutic modalities, including but not limited to trauma informed counselling, crisis counseling, solution focused counseling, etc. for individuals, group, couple and family counselling
  • Working knowledge of community resources to assist in housing stabilization
  • Practical knowledge of refugee protection legislation and process
  • Knowledge and ability to apply an integrated anti-racism, access and equity framework
  • Relevant training in issue management, conflict resolution, crisis intervention, trauma counselling and de-escalation required
  • Analytical, conceptual and problem solving skills

Experience

  • Minimum of three years or more experience as a social worker with equivalent complementary experience in supportive housing services and coordinated case management in the voluntary sector or related field is required
