What responsibilities will you have in this role?

Scopes out and provides methodology and plans for technical projects.

Presents relevant project metrics to FIRSt Project Managers (timeline estimates; project deliverables).

Provides leadership in addressing internal and external client needs and provide strategic research focus to the FIRSt team.

Offers technical support within the research team relating to relevant equipment, Genesis® database, third party laboratory testing arrangements, and nutritional labelling.

Provides subject matter expertise in the area of food science and product development, scale up, and commercialization.

Gives technical expertise and consultative knowledge to proposals and projects in the areas of concept framework, ingredient functionality, analytical recommendations, sensory analysis and appropriate technology.

Facilitates interactive workshop sessions and courses in order to coach/mentor external clients regarding the refinement of project ideas or design strategies.

Applies practical problem-solving skills to real world, real time industry challenges thereby increasing the productivity of local SMEs.

Communicates regularly with clients regarding technical insight, advice and recommendations for projects.

Teaches and mentors students relating to the scientific research approach; project design considerations; systematic project planning; report writing, client management; food science quality considerations; food safety principles.

Assists the FIRSt research team in writing major grant applications.

Communicates and provides updated project status reports, or IWS reports, to active stakeholders or potential clients.

Participates and contributes to the annual reporting activity for funders.

Other related duties as assigned.

What qualifications do you need for this role?

Four-year degree or equivalent from a recognized post-secondary institution in Food Science.

Minimum eight years hands-on formulation and product development experience in consumer-packaged goods (CPG). With hands-on experience working in food manufacturing pilot plants and facilities required.

Experience in an academic institution considered an asset.

Hands on experience with pilot scale prototype development and experience over a broad range of food products is preferred.

Production scale food manufacturing experience is required, along with the ability to perform and document plant scale trials / formulations and experience with food quality control / qualify assurance systems and knowledge of standard laboratory testing (pH, Titratable Acidity, Aw, Brix, viscosity, consistency and moisture).

Excellent interpersonal skills and experience guiding others (i.e. mentoring and coaching).

Advanced level of Microsoft Office Skills in Excel and Word.

Ability to train Student Researchers and develop strategies for data analysis and research outcomes.

Strong attention to detail, analytical and problem-solving skills including the ability to plan and forecast.

Self-starter with strong logistical and organizational skills; must be able to manage multiple projects with exceptional accuracy; good judgement and decision-making ability.

Open to new ideas, innovative and work with high integrity and trust. Demonstrated creativity in work history.

Demonstrated ability to keep current in the field and learn new information quickly.

Demonstrated commitment in delivering excellent service to others as this is key in supporting the success of our students and our College.

Strong communication, collaboration, teamwork and people skills.

Effective ability to interact with others and deal with situations in ways that respect diverse backgrounds, experience and styles.

Flexibility in adapting to change and in participating in consultative decision-making processes.

Hours of Work: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm.

Interview process may consist of a practical skills component.
