With over 60 years of experience as a top nickel producer in Manitoba, the Thompson Mine and Concentrator has a strong future in northern Manitoba. Located in the heart of the northern boreal region, the Thompson Nickel Belt is still considered one of the world’s most promising resources.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Manager, Exploration Thompson to join our Exploration team in Thompson. This is a permanent position.

The Exploration Thompson Manager will be responsible with the planning and execution of all brownfield base metals mineral exploration activities in Thompson in accordance with the proposed annual and 5-year plans and budgets. The work has for main objective to define a pipeline of project areas encompassing new resources that will be handed to the BM business unit and that can be developed into future mining operations that will replace the current resources upon their exhaustion and will feed the existing infrastructure thus ensuring the sustainability of the operations. Eventually such discoveries can even lead to an expansion of the current production. The work requires precise planning and allocation of exploration resources in the form of own Vale personnel and contractors, good planning in order to secure several necessary permits, excellent technical skills and the use of the latest tools and methodologies in light of the technical challenges and great interaction with other areas in Exploration and in the BM business unit to ensure that the projects are properly assessed and promoted through the pipeline. As per the arrangement with the business unit, the manager is responsible for all aspects of projects in the FEL 1 (phase 1 to 3) stage and will work closely with the Project Development group and the Manager of Mineral Projects to support the geology work of FEL 1 (Phase 4) and FEL2-FEL3 projects in the area.

About You

11 to 15 years of experience in a similar subject area

Undergraduate degree is required

P. Geo. or P. Eng. certification is mandatory

Supervise exploration activities in the Thompson Nickel Belt including oversight and tasking of geologists, technical supervisor and contract employees.

Responsible to plan, execute and supervise approved exploration activities/projects/programs in the office and field including health/safety/environment, logistics, resourcing (office/field) and selection and organization of equipment, supplies and instruments.

Provide technical leadership and oversight in Thompson through:

Ensuring the exploration programs follow the optimized sequence of activities based on target type and economic parameters including leveraging the best technology for the activity.

Ensuring appropriate geological models are being used when formulating exploration plans on existing projects.

Leading project generation activities to ensure a pipeline of quality projects aligned to the business unit strategy are available.

Ensuring technical and QAQC standards are communicated and being adhered to.

Providing technical mentoring and training opportunities to staff.

Interact with Exploration and Base Metal’s Project, Economic Evaluation and technical areas to discuss and reassess project results and project evaluations, preparing future planning and contributing to the evolution of the project portfolio

Data is acquired, information is compiled and conformance to company standards ensured. Regular written reports are issued on activities.

Manage existing exploration projects assuring they are completed within approved budgets and timelines.

Assist in consolidating monthly expenditures/physical and forecasts.

Contribute to the preparation of annual budgets, project plans and 5-year strategic plans for Thompson.

Provide geological services for advanced projects and studies as necessary with the desired quality and on schedule.

Work alongside the tenement management area to ensure that all tenement obligations are timely met including planning, budgeting, field activities and reporting are conducted according to the tenement commitment schedule.

Work alongside Exploration’s administration area to ensure all company administrative procedures are followed including procurement, contract management, accounts payables, budget reporting and execution and credit card and travel procedure.

To disseminate Vale’s vision, mission and values for the region and to ensure Vale’s norms and procedures are followed;

To act as an agent of change in the implementation of Vale’s Expected Behaviours and Culture;

To ensure with support from the HSEC Exploration Manager and HSEC staff that all work in is conducted in accordance to Vale’s health, safety, environmental and community normative documents and policies in compliance with local laws.

To prepare strategic presentations for general evaluation of existing projects.

To contribute with innovation in the development of the regional activities as well as to mentor other members of the team disseminating knowledge and experience throughout the group.
