Description
The Outreach Worker for the Homeless Outreach Feeding Program is responsible for operating the program under the direction of the CFS Coordinator, as outlined below.
HOURS:
- Monday to Friday, afternoons, and evenings. Flexibility required.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Adheres to the policies and standards of The Salvation Army as established in policy and program manuals, Health & Safety Guidelines, job descriptions, written memos, and verbal agreements.
- Operates the Homeless Outreach Feeding Program (HOFP) using the Food Truck to serve food to those experiencing homelessness.
- Recruits, trains, and coordinates volunteers to operate the Food Truck for the HOFP according to Salvation Army policies & procedures.
- Makes contact with those experiencing homelessness, assessing their needs, and connects them with the appropriate service, including shelter, housing, addictions, mental health, etc. May perform the VAT with clients to assess needs.
- Monitors appropriate behaviour of clients at Food Truck; intervenes in crises, provides emotional support and advocacy as required.
- Coordinates with the Chaplain on scheduling to provide services as required.
- Record and maintain statistical information regarding the HOFP within parameters set by The Salvation Army and funders.
- Represent the Salvation Army Community & Family Services while working with other service agencies to advocate for clients.
- Attend community network groups as required, representing the Salvation Army.
- Liaises with Police, community agencies, families.
- Under the direction of the CFS Coordinator, assist in finding and handling donations of food and supplies for the operation of the HOFP and other CF&S programs.
- Liaise with the Food Aid Delivery Coalition for the pickup and delivery of meals donated by community entities.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
Education/Certifications:
- Diploma in Social Services or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- First Aid and CPR Certificate.
- Training in Vulnerability Assessment Tool (VAT.)
- Training in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention.
Experience:
- Have 3 years of prior related experience, including frontline experience in a social service environment and a solid understanding of the issues surrounding homelessness.
Required Skills/Knowledge:
- Training in Vulnerability Assessment Tool (VAT).
- Training in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, conflict resolution, and mediation skills are essential.
- Must have First Aid and CPR certificate.
- Ability to identify sensitive issues and maintain confidentiality.
- Must be sensitive to and respectful of cultural and lifestyle diversity.
- Must have a Class 5 Driver’s License and access to a vehicle.
- Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.
- Must demonstrate a positive attitude towards the homeless and individuals with substance abuse and concurrent problems, including mental health concerns.
Successful candidates, prior to hiring, may be required to provide:
- Background check consent and a clear vulnerable sector screening.
- A clean driver abstract.
- Completion of our online Armatus Abuse Training and required Health and Safety training.
