Description
Casual position to facilitate the Positive Lifestyle Program and provide appropriate spiritual care to people impacted by the correctional and justice system and referred to participate in PLP
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Key Responsibilities:
Lead clients in one to one or small groups through prescribed program content
- Teaching content
- Explaining concepts
- Helping clients apply the program to their lives
Provide emotional and spiritual care to clients as required
- Note spiritual needs
- Identify spiritual care interventions
- Document needs and interventions and other spiritual information in the spiritual care logs
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
Education/Certifications:
- Completion of a Theological Certificate and/or training with a recognized chaplaincy or spiritual care education body (e.g. The Salvation Army Certificate of Chaplaincy, Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) or equivalent)
- Uniformed Salvationist preferred (ordination by local recognized Christian denomination may be considered)
- Certification by the Ontario Multi-Faith Council on Spiritual and Religious Care an asset
- Critical Incident Stress Management training an asset
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered
Experience:
- Minimum of 2 years of prior related experience in spiritual care
- Develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities
Required Skills/Knowledge:
- Demonstrated commitment to work within The Salvation Army mission and values and demonstrated ability to apply them in all aspects of chaplaincy ministry
- Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility
- Knowledge of and experience in Christian-based interviewing and counseling skills
- Knowledge of other faith groups religious beliefs and practices
- Knowledge and understanding of the court process
- Excellent interpersonal skills and able to work with persons who are in crisis
- Possesses effective oral and written communication skills, and effective interpersonal skills to assist deal with offenders, their families and staff
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office, internet and good computer skills to complete reports, access email and prepare letters, etc.
- Knowledge of addiction counseling and treatment resources and Salvation Army, correctional, and community resources for referral and support
PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:
- Languages in addition to English are helpful but not required
- Previous program facilitation/instruction experience is helpful but not required
- Evening and weekend availability are helpful but not required
Successful candidates will be required to provide:
- Obtain Vulnerable Sector Search and institutional security clearance
- Education verification
- This position requires the successful candidate to have a valid driver’s license and be able to provide proof that you have a valid driver’s license upon being hired
