Description
The Community and Justice Services Worker administers the Direct Accountability Program supported by the Salvation Army Peterborough in accordance with the Ministry of Attorney General. This program is an alternative process to prosecution for individuals referred by the criminal system. The Direct Accountability Program allows individuals to be accountable through community-based alternatives instead of the traditional criminal court processes. This includes attending groups such as Anger Management, restitution/charitable donation payments and completing community service.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Client Services
- Administer Direct Accountability program according to the Ministry of the Attorney General and Salvation Army Policies and Procedures; receive referrals directly from the Crown.
- Work with individuals sanctioned by the courts and victims of crime.
- Conduct intake interviews and assessments to determine suitability and willingness of the individual to complete the program ensuring individuals are aware or their legal rights.
- Support individuals in identifying and securing appropriate community service placement based on individual circumstances.
- Monitor and provide direction to assist individuals in being successful in their placement.
- Coordinate referrals to other community agencies as appropriate.
- Promote the program within the criminal justice system with key partners
- Support participants during challenging situations.
- Manage restitution and charitable donation funds – receiving and delivering
- Complete reports addressing outcomes to be provided to the court or police
- Promote Community and Family Services Programs
Perform other duties as required.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- This is a temporary full-time position based on 40 hours per week
- Work environment is The Salvation Army Community and Family Services Office and the criminal courthouse
- Flexibility in scheduling is required and may vary according to requirements of responsibilities
- The Supervisor will set the hours of work and work schedule
- Travel is associated with this position
Normal hours of work 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Completion of a two-year diploma from an accredited institution in Correctional Services, Police Foundations, Social Services, Mental Health and Addictions, Community and Justice Services
- Undergraduate Degree in Criminology, Legal Studies, Human Services/Sciences, Social Work, Psychology or Sociology preferred
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered
EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:
- 1- 3 years related experience working with adults in the criminal justice system
- Experience or willingness to learn the process for referrals from the Crown or police
- Experience working with professionals in the criminal legal system. i.e., police, duty counsel, and the Crown’s office
- Proficient in completing appropriate documents pertaining the sanctions of the court order where necessary.
- Experience or awareness of delivering various programs such as Anger Management
- Experience with Mental Health, Addictions, Homelessness, 2SLGBTQQIA+, Immigrant/ Refugees, Indigenous and multicultural awareness; ASIST would be an asset
- Strong knowledge of Criminal Justice System and Community Services and how they navigate
- The ability to work with and navigate systems and advocate where appropriate
- Be able to build, maintain and enhance professional relationships with Justice Partners and Community Agencies
- Knowledge of, understanding and ability to implement and follow through with appropriate sanctions as well as supervise and monitor individuals
- Knowledge of and ability to work with the diversity and accessibility needs of individuals without prejudice
- Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License, personal vehicle required and insurance, current copy of driver’s abstract for review and verification that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required
SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:
- Ability to set strong consistent boundaries and able to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
- Have experience and/or able to learn various computer programs, such as Outwork, Word, Excel, and agency data bases
- Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution
- A high level of integrity, good judgment, and ability to maintain appropriate confidentiality
- Ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative team environment
- Represent the organization in a positive, professional, and engaging manner

- Excellent interpersonal skills, integrity, and adaptability; attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills
- Lead by example, by demonstrating a strong work ethic, self-motivated and disciplined
- Ability to adhere to The Salvation Army Standards of Conduct and Code of Ethics
- Proven case management skills are essential along with strong case documentation, statistical reporting, file management and organizational skills
- Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening
- Ability and willingness to provide a valid First Aid/CPR Certification and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification
- Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities
