Waterfront Lifeguard/Instructor I & II – Seasonal Positions

Do you have experience guarding a waterfront environment? Are you passionate about leadership and want to contribute to a professional, safe, fun, and positive aquatic experience for staff and the public? The West Vancouver Community Services Department has two openings for a temporary part-time Lifeguard/Instructor I & II positions for the period from June 12 – September 6, 2021 to work primarily at the District’s beaches. The positions are responsible for:

  • Monitors swimming and facility activities and enforces safety regulations in indoor and outdoor aquatic facilities and waterfront areas
  • Rescues distressed swimmers and administers first aid, rescue breathing and other approved safety measures when necessary. As required, may request assistance from emergency response agencies.
  • Instructs all age groups in swimming techniques for all levels of swimming including West Vancouver Preschool Lessons, Red Cross Programs, Lifesaving Society courses, recreational and specialized aquatic programs.
  • Leads aquatic programs, special events, birthday parties, and other recreational programs in the aquatics facility.
  • assisting with the operation of beach lifeguard service;
  • supervising, developing aquatic staff and facilitating staff training;
  • providing administrative assistance and handling customer service inquiries; and,
  • assuming responsibility for facility operations as required.

The successful candidate will: be a high school graduate, have a minimum of 2 years’ experience as a lifeguard & swimming instructor, supervisory experience, beach lifeguarding experience and knowledge of waterfront & pool operations.Required Licenses and Current Certificates include: Water Safety Instructor (WSI), National Lifeguard – Pool, Waterpark & Waterfront, CPR Level C, AED and Standard First Aid (or equivalent). The successful candidate must also obtain OFA Level 1 before beginning employment.

The successful candidate will be required to supply a police information check and a copy of their credentials.

Position Status:
Union (WVMEA) – Temporary, Part-Time

Hours of Work:
Hours & days of work will vary. Each position will be comprised of a combination of hours as a Lifeguard I and Lifeguard II at both the beach and pool to add to approximately 30 total hours per week. Hours will be dependent upon weather and operational requirements.

Rate of Pay:
LG I – $23.90 per hour plus 12% in lieu of benefits LG II –$24.83 per hour plus 12% in lieu of benefits

These positions have a pay structure with five steps which increase every 6 months for the first three steps, and annually thereafter.
