The Ministry of Finance is seeking a highly skilled and results-oriented Economist to join the Economic and Fiscal Policy Branch. In this role you will provide significant contributions on all matters involving the Province’s economic outlook.
The Opportunity
Reporting to the Director, Economic Policy, Economic and Fiscal Policy Branch in the Ministry of Finance, this position is responsible for providing the Minister of Finance, Treasury Board, and the government with economic analysis and policy advice on a wide range of economic, fiscal and financial issues and trends that affect economic growth and job creation; developing government’s overall economic policy objectives, preparing and presenting alternative policy positions, and analyzing economic trends and the impacts of alternative policy options; managing the development of economic forecasts for the medium and long term, including working in strategic partnership with internal and external stakeholders, to ensure decision makers have high-quality, current information on which to base decisions; developing new reports and refining existing reports on current economic conditions to provide current and succinct information on a timely basis to internal and external stakeholders; preparing and developing publications and presentations on the government’s economic outlook for use by a wide ranging client group; collaborating and leveraging linkages with other teams in the branch (i.e. Fiscal Policy and the Bureau of Statistics); assisting with managing data vendors and consultants, and the agreements for both; and supporting the Director, Economic Policy in their efforts to modernize the team, and act on behalf of the Director as required.
Ideal Candidate
You are passionate about utilizing economic and forecasting data to solve complex public policy problems. In addition, you will have a Master’s degree with an emphasis on economics, economic policy, and public policy; an undergraduate degree in similar fields of study may also be considered accompanied with sufficient work experience; the ability to establish and achieve monthly, quarterly, and annual objectives; a strong background in macroeconomic modelling, economic forecasting, impact and shock analyses, and business intelligence tools and methodologies; a strong understanding of the current issues facing the provincial, national, and global economies; exceptional written and oral communication skills, strong interpersonal skills and relationship building skills, and the ability to work with, and influence, a variety of stakeholders; proven capability to identify and deliver key strategic insights, counsel and policy to ensure decision making is made with the best possible advice, with a high degree of innovation and accountability; a solid track record of building and maintaining credible, trusting, collaborative relationships across a diverse group of internal and external stakeholders; and the ability to deal with confidential or sensitive issues with diplomacy and tact.
