Job Summary
Responsible for a variety of services and duties related to the processing of internal and Canada Post mail for the City of Ottawa and Ottawa Police Services. Responsible for receiving incoming shipments from internal and external sources and the shipping, transportation, and tracking of parcels, packages, and boxes of material in and out of the two main City of Ottawa sites and other city and police facilities.
Education & Experience
Completion of Grade 12
Six (6) months experience in a mail / courier delivery / shipping and receiving environment including experience with courier services, mail meter machines, tracking deliveries, and transporting mail, products and/or parcels to and from internal and external locations.
- Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic requirements.
Language, Certificates & Licenses
A valid Ontario unrestricted “G” class driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated.
Candidates will be required to undergo and pass Ottawa Police Services’ level 3 security clearance including:
Background Record Check (criminal record check and local police service check)
Credit Check
Fingerprinting
Background reference investigation
English oral, reading, writing required.
Knowledge
Sound knowledge of mail/courier procedures, including mail code system
Knowledge of Canada Post pricing schedules for mail and special mail services
Knowledge of the operation of office equipment such as the copier
Working knowledge of computer software applications MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook
Knowledge of name/mail code search capability on OZONE
Sound knowledge of shipping and receiving environments
Sound knowledge on the use of handheld devices to enable the tracking of parcels and the use of tracking software
Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers.
Competencies & Skills
Ability to read and analyze mail code and address information quickly in order to facilitate sorting process
Good hand-eye coordination to facilitate mail sorting in a mailroom setting
Ability to perform tasks in a timely manner while working in a decentralized working environment
Ability to provide for the proper handling of material that is of sensitive, confidential and/or personal in nature
Ability to provide for the safe handling of dangerous or controlled substances
Ability to assess a situation where a package or other item could be deemed to be suspicious or hazardous
Ability to tactfully and courteously deal with callers and visitors in person, by telephone and e-mail, including difficult customers
Ability to push and lift bins of mail and packages up to 70 lbs.
Ability to operate a forklift, various types of dollies, and stack and shrink wrap pallets of material
Ability to operate elevated loading docks in shipping and receiving
Ability to drive a car or truck and carry mail and packages throughout the City, daily, in all weather conditions
Ability to meet other training requirements for new/other equipment that would enhance the overall efficiency of the Branch
