Description
The Salvation Army in Abbotsford requires casual/on-call cook to work in the Meal Centre. Meal Centre Cook will prepare and serve nutritious meals for The Salvation Army clients (160 to 250) and provide supervision to volunteers.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Compliance with and ongoing enforcement of the Salvation Army Centre of Hope policy and procedures.
- Knowledge of Policy & Procedures and on-going updates
- Prepare food as listed on the provided menu
- Cleans dishes, cooking utensils and counters in accordance with schedule
- Work with volunteers, modeling cooking and life skills, in the process of preparing meals
- Ensure all food and products are consistently prepared and served according to recipes, portioning, cooking, and serving standards
- Adapts work practices within specific parameter to ensure the efficient delivery of food services
- Follows preventative maintenance procedures for related equipment
- Follows the responsibility for the ordering and monitoring of food and kitchen supplies and establishes guidelines for the security of food supplies and all cooking equipment if directed while filling in for a prolonged absence
- Ability to work with difficult or emotionally needy people in a patient and compassionate manner
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Cook’s Training papers (1 year course) are an asset.
- The successful applicant must provide a satisfactory criminal records check prior to beginning employment.
- The incumbent is required to lift more than 20 pounds.
Experience:
- The successful applicant will have 1 – 3 years of prior related exp.
- Cook’s Training papers (1 year course) are an asset.

Work Environment:
The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions:
- Dealing with angry people
- Verbal Abuse
- Hot/Steamy environment

- Cuts, Burns and entering freezers
PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:
- Experience in cooking for a large group of people.
- Experience in working with volunteers.
- Experience in working as part of a team – willingness to carry out various duties as required.
