Description
The Outreach Worker is responsible for the implementation, instruction, and coordination of a limited range of community-based programs for The Collingwood Church in accordance with the Salvation Army mission, vision, and values. The incumbent will build relationships with Collingwood residents and Community Members and contribute in a positive manner to the staff team.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Programming
- Conduct a needs assessment to collect information regarding gaps in outreach program services in Collingwood and the surrounding area
- Assist with ensuring that ministry objectives are consistently accomplished and applied to all outreach program initiatives and where applicable link community members to the church family and church programs wherever possible
- Network with community agencies to aid in outreach potential
- Develop trusting relationships, provide support, assistance, and encouragement to clients, and respond to concerned citizen calls
- Make necessary referrals to shelter, health care, professional counseling, spiritual and religious care, and other relevant support
- Support, advocate for and refer clients to housing and related resources with the goal of reintegration into the community
- Conduct initial intake assessment to determine immediate needs and appropriate support
- Recommend and assist in the development and revision of outreach program policies
- Assist with Christmas programs and special events, etc.
- Actively promote Collingwood Community Church programs within the community
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Completion of a 2-year Community College diploma or certificate preferably in Social Services and/or Psychology
- A working knowledge of mental health and addiction issues
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered
Experience and Skilled Knowledge
- Minimum of two (2) years of prior related experience, including experience working with multi-barriered persons, individuals with mental health and addiction issues and a variety of social service programs
- Some experience with community programming in a church setting would be an asset.
- Some supervisory experience
- Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License, personal vehicle and insurance is required, current copy of driver’s abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required
- Possess knowledge and understanding of local resources for Mental Health and Addictions services, housing, income support and other support systems

- Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics
- Ability to complete assignments and meet deadlines with minimal supervision
- Proficient in working in a computerized environment; must demonstrate strong skills using Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, and Power Point
- Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening
- Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities
- Ability and willingness to provide a valid Standard First Aid and CPR Certification, Crisis Prevention Institute Certification and Safe Food Handlers Certification.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- This is a permanent full-time position based on 35 hours per week
- This job requires the ability to lift/move up to 40 lbs. and reach, bend, stoop frequently and or work in a standing position for long periods of time
- Travel is associated with this position {5 to 10%}; required to use a Salvation Army program vehicle when available.
Normal hours of work: Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and includes ½ hour unpaid meal break
