The Department of Geoscience in the Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in in-situ acoustic emission field studies.

Job Description:
A postdoctoral researcher with AE experience in a laboratory and/or field setting is being sought for a 2-year appointment at the University of Calgary.

In situ acoustic emission (AE) field studies will be undertaken in a quarry environment to characterize dilatancy and microfracturing (mm to cm scale) induced by small-scale fluid injection into a naturally fractured and stratified siltstone rock. AEs are indicative of weakening of the rock prior to the formation of macroscopic fractures and will be measured continuously over several days in shallow (20m) fluid-filled boreholes. This work will be carried out in conjunction with other passive measurements using optical fibres, with the overall aim of characterizing the geomechanical behaviour of the fractured rock mass.
