Description
The Cook provides nutritious and balanced meals and snacks to our residents and community guests who join us daily for lunch and dinner. The cook not only prepares and serves meals but is responsible for welcoming, assigning tasks to our volunteers and supervises them while they are volunteering
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ensures meals are prepared according to posted menu and left-over food is stored properly
- Ensures all kitchen equipment is cleaned and sanitized according to Health & Safety Procedures and Policies after every meal
- Ensures kitchen and dining area is kept clean at all times and conducts regular cleaning according to schedule.
- Ensures all food and kitchen supplies deliveries are received and stored away properly
- Ensures rotation of food products according to policy and limit food waste
- Cleans all kitchen equipment, counters and surfaces, fridge, freezers and storage rooms
- Assigns volunteers tasks and supervises their activity
- Prepares bagged meals daily
- Prepares snacks for residents
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
Education/Certifications:
- Minimum Grade 12 education plus Food Handler Certificate. NOTE: An alternative level of education and experience may be acceptable
- Possess current certification in First Aid/CPR+AED
Experience:
- At least two (2) years prior related experience working/ cooking in a commercial kitchen
Required Skills/Knowledge:
- Ability to work under minimum supervision
- Knowledge and understanding of Crisis Intervention, Canada Food Guide and use of food services equipment and storage
- Possess current Food Safe Handling Certificate
- Previous experience cooking for groups of 90+ individuals (up to 250)
- Able to cook a wide range of foods especially understanding food allergies and food restrictions
- Demonstrated skills pertinent to working with homeless persons
- Ability to lift a minimum of 20 pounds
- Sympathetic and willing to adhere to the mission, philosophies, policies and values of The Salvation Army
Successful candidate will be required to provide upon hiring:
- A clear vulnerable sector screening
- Participate in our online Armatus Abuse Training and Health and Safety training required upon hiring, as well as updated annually
- Vaccination against Tuberculosis and Immunization for Hepatitis B
HOURS: Potential shifts 6:30 am – 1:30 pm or 1:30 pm – 8:30 pm (Monday to Sunday)
