Title: Junior High Teacher (Grade 6 English Homeroom, Grade 9 Elective – TBD – focus on personal development; community based learning and service learning)

Reports to: School Administrator

Location: Bridgewater Junior High School

Description:
The Junior High Teacher is responsible for teaching and providing support to students within the South Shore Regional Centre for Education. The Teacher will work within the Inclusive Education Policy framework by participating in individualized program planning with school staff and families to maximize learning experiences for students.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Valid Nova Scotia Teacher Certification

Bachelor of Education – Secondary

Masters of Education – Special or Inclusive Education

Experience working/supporting in the Learning Centre

University education in English

OR a minimum of three (3) years of experience teaching a minimum of 50% English Language Arts within the last five (5) years with positive performance appraisals and/or references

Professional development in English

Experience teaching English

Experience teaching grades 5-9

Excellent communication (written and oral and electronic), problem solving and interpersonal skills;

Ability to collaborate with school and inter-agency teams to support early intervention strategies, coordination of services, problem solving and program planning;

Proven ability to work as a contributing member of school program planning and multidisciplinary teams;

Ability to apply knowledge, experience and commitment in the areas of culturally responsive pedagogy;

Current knowledge of developmental trauma, the impact on learning, communication and social engagement throughout the lifespan;

An interest and willingness to engage in continuing education and professional development;

Ability to apply training and experience to develop, implement, and monitor individualized programs and teaching strategies based on the individual needs of students;

Ability to employ non-violent crisis intervention techniques;

Ability to demonstrate teaching strategies and coach school staff as needed;

Ability to maintain and promote confidentiality as the norm;

Experience in planning and developing training and professional learning opportunities related to students with behaviours of concern;

Proven ability to communicate and work alongside diverse cultural and racial backgrounds.

Demonstrated ability to value the voice and contribution of others while remaining open to corrective criticism.

Completion of WHMIS and First Aid, or willingness to obtain upon hire.
