Description
The Family Services Worker assists individuals and families who are seeking aid and assistance from, or have been referred to, The Salvation Army. This position also provides support to the Food Bank Program and other programs provided by the Community and Family services.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Client Services and Programs
- Conduct initial intake assessment to determine immediate needs and supports needed by the client
- Provide emergency assistance services, i.e., food, clothing, household needs in accordance with policy
- Assist with seasonal programs such as Summer Camp programs, Christmas Kettles, Christmas Toy registrations, and other Community and Family Service programs as directed; ensure that ministry objectives are accomplished
- Assist with workshops for clients/families that are provided by the ministry unit
- Oversee the activities of the Food Bank, to ensure that the food bank is tidy and clean, ensure enough stock, sort and process donated goods, process clients through the food bank and record any food donations
- Network and refer to The Salvation Army, government, and community social service providers to coordinate resources for the benefit of clients and program when necessary
Supervision
- Oversee and support scheduled volunteers, demonstrate work methods, and ensure they work together to achieve the purpose of the organization and enhance the ministries of The Salvation Army
- Demonstrate work methods to volunteers
Finance and Administration
- General administrative duties as required, such as answering phones, directing inquires etc.
- Ensure that Ministry Unit policies and procedures are followed for the safe/secure handling of all monetary donations received and appropriate documentation of gift cards and various vouchers is maintained, i.e., milk and clothing vouchers
- Maintain accurate records of client information on The Salvation Army’s computer system Link 2 Feed while maintaining confidentiality and providing statistical reports
- Refer monetary donations to designated staff who prepare and issue donation receipts for income tax purposes
Health and Safety
- Ensure that the Food Bank and area is maintained regarding appearance, condition and safety as recommended by Public Health etc.
- Adhere to all Health and Safety Standards and the specific requirements regarding COVID-19 as per the local Health Unit
- Ensure the safety and comfort of the ministry unit by maintaining cleanliness and food safety etc.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and proceduresPerform other duties as required
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
Education/Certifications:
- Completion of a Community College Diploma, Social Service Worker, counselling or equivalent in a related field of study would be an asset
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered
- Ability and willingness to provide a valid Safe Food Handlers Certificate
Experience:
- Minimum of two (2) years of prior related experience working with multi-barriered persons, individuals with mental health issues and a variety of social service programs would be preferred
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered
Required Skills/Knowledge:
- Knowledge of community-based resources and experience networking with government and social service agencies
- Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License, own vehicle, and insurance
- Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills
- Self-motivated/disciplined
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative team environment
- Excellent interpersonal skills, integrity, and adaptability
- Exhibit good listening skills, have strong oral/written communication skills and respect authority
- Proficiency in all Microsoft Office products is required – i.e., Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, etc.
- Ability to maintain information in confidence and exercise good judgement
- Ability to use tact and diplomacy when dealing with the public, both in person and on the telephone
- Ability to learn, adapt, and utilize technology and processes quickly
- Ability to prioritize, organize and manage multiple tasks; the ability to complete assignments and meet deadlines with minimal supervisionLead by example, by demonstrating a strong work ethic
- Represent the organization in a positive, professional, and engaging manner
- Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities
Successful candidate will be required to provide upon hiring:
- A clear vulnerable sector screening
- A clean drivers abstract
- Participate in our online Armatus Abuse Training and Health and Safety training required upon hiring, as well as updated annually
HOURS: 20 hours per week. Monday to Thursday 8:45a.m. – 2:15p.m. (unpaid 30 min. Lunch Break)
