Description
The Driver will be responsible for delivery and pickup of donated goods and the safe, secure, efficient transportation of these goods between donors, clients, and the warehouse for a great cause. The goods will primarily be toys but also food at times. In addition, duties consist of standard warehouse duties of receiving, sorting, put-away, picking and shipping. Regular equipment (manual pallet jack, etc.) use is required as well as some manual work to help supply donated goods to member agencies who help the needy in our communities.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Driving:
- Delivery and / or pickup of goods in various vehicles up to and including a 5-ton truck (if licensed)
- Operate, inspect, and maintain vehicle and related documentation in compliance with CVOR requirements
- Document / report any vehicle incidents or damage in a timely manner
- Load and unload truck with toys and food as required
- Follow assigned delivery and pickup routes in a timely manner
General:
- Promote the Mission, Policies and Objectives of the Ontario Distribution Centre
- Prepare, complete and submit documentation in a timely manner as required
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment
- Adhere to the Salvation Army Policy & Procedure Manual, Ontario Distribution Centre Policy & Procedure Manual and Ontario Distribution Centre Health & Safety Guidelines
- Ensure all comments regarding goods and / or services from Ministry Units, suppliers or other contacts are communicated to management in a timely manner
- Wear the appropriate safety / Personal Protective Equipment and maintain a clean uniform
- Ensure all work is completed in a safe manner, in accordance with TSA, WSIB, CVOR, and all other regulatory requirements
- Other related duties as assigned
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Frequent delivery/driving which may vary considerably by need and season
- Warehouse work is typically performed in an environment with exposure to handling garbage, monotony of work (repetitive tasks)
- Work involves some potential work in freezers with some outdoor work in winter
- May on occasion be required to lift/move/transport weights of more than 39lbs but regular weights would normally fall under 39lbs
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Completion of High School
- Current Forklift Operators Certificate is an asset
EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:
- Valid class G driver’s license is required
- Valid DZ Driver’s license is an asset
- Minimum of one (1) year related experience
- Current Forklift Operators Certificate is an asset

- Proven attention to detail and the ability to follow legislation, directions, policies, procedures
- Ability to lift up to 39 pounds personally and safely
- Reliable, self-motivated, and confidential
- Ability to work in a team setting as well as independently
- Good communication skills, both verbal and written
- Able to adopt a flexible work schedule during peak and / or seasonal times
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to perform several tasks concurrently with ease and professionalism
- Ability to understand and adhere to the Code of Ethics
- Able to work in a consultative, diplomatic and tactful manner
- Organizational / time-management skills to plan and manage the workload
- Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening
- Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities
HOURS: 40 hours per week
