Description
The Education Liaison is responsible for the overall co-ordination of the facility’s education program and assist in the evaluation of this program
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Know and follow the policies and procedures of The Salvation Army Correctional and Justice Services Cuthbert House. Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services, Peel Board of Education and the local school
- Ensure the safety and security of all Cuthbert House students through superior supervision
- Identify program needs
- Plan and evaluate programs
- Research academic history of students
- Liaise with community agencies and resources in order to develop a network to assist students
- Supervise and evaluate educational goals
- Supervise the day-to-day classroom operation
- Supervise student placement and volunteers
- Counsel residents in relation to the educational setting
- Advocate for students
- Participate in credit granting and report cards
- Ensure classroom is adequately supplied
- Report on student progress and participation in class
- Motivate youth in the program
- Attend meetings as required
- Complete sundry duties for required housekeeping and maintenance duties in the facility including training on Safe Food Handling and Preparation
- Other duties that may be assigned by the Director
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- A degree or diploma in Social Science, Corrections, Childcare or Social Services and related experience
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered
EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:
- 2+ years prior related experience in the field
- Experience in crisis management
- Experience working with youth
- Knowledge of correctional practices
- Experience in Case Management process and practices
- Knowledge of the Youth corrections system and processes
SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:
- Leadership skills and problem-solving skills
- Strong knowledge of the education system
- Able to work in a consultative, diplomatic and tactful manner
- Able to proactively recognize potential risks and issues, respond with solutions
- Strong written and verbal communication skills – clear and simple to understand
- Good judgement
- Approachability and supportive
- Respect and understanding of The Salvation Army – its mission, culture, and values
- Computer literacy
- Seeks common ground in navigating challenging issues and constructively manages conflict to create win-win solutions wherever possible
- Effective organizational and time management skills – self-motivated and disciplined self-starter, adaptable
- Fluent in the French language an asset
- Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening
- Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
HOURS: 40 hours per week as per schedule
